When Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy hit theaters in 2004 it was not only a hit, but became an instant comedy classic. This film sported more quotable lines than almost any film in history that are still popular today. In addition to Will Ferrell, the film brought in a few recognizable stars that weren’t quite the super stars they are today including Paul Rudd and Steve Carell. Now almost 10 years later the gang is back for Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, but will it be able to ignite the same laughs and memorable lines or will be just another unnecessary sequel?
Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues follows San Diego’s top newsman Ron Burgundy and his number one news team return to New York to take on New York’s first 24-hour news channel. It’s no surprise that a sequel was made, but after taking so long to get it made could it actually still manage to live up to the original? The answer is a resounding yes! Sure the movie is ridiculous, but so was the original. With this latest entry into the life of legendary Ron Burgundy they were smart to keep everything that made the first one so much fun and just built on that on an epic level. Sure there is a story here, but it actually plays out more as a bunch of varying bits thrust together with a ridiculous story arc to bring it all together. Of course they got the band back together with Ferrell, Carell, Rudd, Koechner and Applegate, but this time around they have some new blood tagging along for the ride including Meagan Good, James Marsden, Kristen Wiig and a slew of cameos that are unexpectedly awesome. The memorable dialogue is in full effect here with numerous quotable lines that are sure to begin making their way into pop culture in no time. The channel 9 news team all fall right back into their roles like they never left, but the time away actually has probably made them even better. There are numerous completely useless moments to the story, but are so over the top hilarious that it doesn’t even matter. While the boys clearly dominate this film Wiig’s addition is by far the best addition. Her interactions with Carell’s Brick are easily some of the best moments of the entire film.
This is one of those sequels that not only lives up to the original, it actually steps things up quite a bit in a positive way. This is obviously geared towards a particular audience and those people are sure to have a great time. The film runs almost 2 hours which isn’t the norm for this type of film, but delivers everything fans could want. Just leave your brain at the door and step behind the desk of the news team for a ridiculous fun time. In addition to the original theatrical and unrated release this Blu-ray not only includes commentaries, behind the scenes featurettes, gag reels, Line-o-rama’s, cast table reads, and much more it also sports the recently released Super-Sized R-Rated Version that included 763 new jokes giving the fans a fun alternate edition of this already hilarious film.
