Just outside the Px food court at Schofield Barracks, Hawai'i, you will find a little black mobile trailer selling Akita Dogs, which are Japanese curry dogs. Run by a veteran, this is a perfect spot for service members, families, and Department of Defense civilians. One taste of the Akita Dog and you’ll be back for more!

There’s more to Papa’s Dog Pound than just their popular Akita Dog. Creatively, each special hot dog dish is named after a dog breed. Other items on the menu include:

  • Pit Bull – medium hot chili dog
  • Junk Yard Dog – a plain hot dog with your choice of condiments
  • So Hound – a hot link or dog with sauerkraut
  • Puppy Dog – a plain mini dog with your choice of condiments

Papa’s Dog Pound is run by a husband and wife, and often their son will be found taking orders and helping customers make their choices while standing in the growing line. The line at Papa’s Dog Pound will often have customers talking about the delicious food they have eaten from this establishment before and comparing the other items on the menu. Occasionally, customers will also make new friends while standing in line.

In the short month or so that Papa’s Dog Pound has been at Schofield Barracks, they already have regulars who continue to return for specific favorites. On Fridays only, there’s a special beef curry plate as well. Orders can be taken on the spot, or by text, phone, or email. With these options, you can’t go wrong to beat the crowd to Papa’s Dog Pound!
