In 2013, Pantene Pro-V released its “Truly Relaxed” and “Truly Natural” hair care lines. According to Pantene, these particular products are targeted for women who are repairing or preventing their unique hair structure from the effects of chemical processing, heat damage, and the effects of weather and climate.
As a woman who has suffered from extremely damaged hair in the past due to excessive heat, over processed chemical applications, and relying on others to care for my hair, I decided to take matters into my own hands. As a result of learning healthy hair care habits, I’d occasionally come across the term “co-wash” in several blog posts, articles, and YouTube videos.
Co-wash is short for “conditioner washing”. You are basically washing your hair in the same way, minus shampoo and using conditioner. Since most shampoos contain ingredients that can strip hair of its moisture, co-wash is a way to increase moisture and help hair retain some of its natural oils. If your hair is prone to dryness or needs an occasional moisture boost, especially if you shampoo your hair often, co-washing may be something you can look into.
Any conditioner can work, but for the past month I’ve been using Pantene’s Truly Natural Co-Wash Cleansing Conditioner. What attracted me to this product was the fact that it’s a 3-in-1 formula: it cleanses, conditions, and detangles hair in one easy application. I do this 1-2 times per week and I’ve seen a significant increase in moisture retention and the detangling process. Even after the very first use, my hair was extremely soft even before deep conditioning, and I actually detangled my whole head of textured hair before it dried up on me :)
After the first use, I didn’t need to apply moisturizer to the whole of my head because the co-wash worked so well. My hair had body and felt so light.
Though I am not considered “natural” (no chemical applications), I am texlaxed (intentional underprocessing of chemical application to maintain some texture), this product worked great for me. I was worried that it would lead to breakage due to the fact that my hair was so soft so I did follow up with a slight protein based deep conditioner.
Pantene Pro-V’s Truly Natural Co-Wash Cleansing Conditioner is enriched with jojoba and coconut oil, natural oils that add shine and help dry hair accept moisture.
This is definitely a favorite of mines and I rate it a 5/5. This product can be found at several retail stores such as Walgreens, K-Mart, Target, and CVS. Prices start at $4.99 for a 21.1 Fl oz. bottle.
