Palomino Bar and Restaurant - tasty comfort food, fun bingo, retro atmosphere

Palomino's, located in Milwaukee's Bayview neighborhood, is a retro treasure trove with plenty of deep-fried and vegan dishes. Inside reminded me of my parent's basement before they remodeled; there were framed pictures of horses, cowboys and cowgirls and Pabst beer memorabilia hung on wood panel walls.

We started out the evening with a 'Happy Cowgirl,' a Palomino specialty drink, made with bourbon, orange juice, sour mix and grenadine.  Loved it.  It was fruity, but not too sweet and very smooth.

Next, we tried the Ta-chos appetizer - wow, what a large portion and was it good!  Ta-chos is a spin from nachos using tator tots instead of chips; crispy tator tots were smothered with melted cheese, lettuce, pico de gallo and sour cream on the side.

There was a large variety of deep fried sandwiches and vegan dishes.  If you are watching your weight, leave the diet at home and forget about it.  Most dishes were either fried, covered with cheese or both.  There were only three salads on the menu, including the side house salad.

I ordered the chipolte turkey melt sandwich and had a choice of two sides and a sauce.  I asked if I could have veggies and was offered a side salad for a $1 extra.  I went with corn and the jalapeno coleslaw instead.

The turkey melt was tasty with melted cheddar cheese, grilled onions and chipolte mayo on the side.  The bread was crisp, not soggy, and well toasted but not dried-out.

The two sides were nothing to brag about.  The corn was average and I didn't care for the jalapeno coleslaw - it had a strange taste.

Our service was friendly, attentive and prompt.  Courses came out in a timely manner and our drinks were always refilled.

The soundtrack was heaven for Gen-Xers with lots of 90's grunge sprinkled with a few contemporary alternative rock songs and some 70's classics such as Led Zeppelin.

Currently, on Monday evenings at 7 PM, Palomino patrons can play five rounds of bingo to win prizes.  The hosts are two retro-inspired guys who joke with themselves and the audience making it quite entertaining.  Prizes can include Palomino gift certificates, Deep fried Palomino vodka, Pabst socks and tickets to win a 1971 Honda motorcyle.

Prices were moderate.  The 'Happy Cowgirl' was $5.50 for a pint and the sandwich and Ta-chos were each $8.95.

I will definately return to Palomino for more 'Happy Cowgirls', excellent music and entertaining bingo, but next time I'll try a salad.
