During the summer of 2013, the film “Pacific Rim” was released. It recently came out on Blu-ray, and it is a great choice for people who like movies with a lot of action and special effects. And if you like films with really big characters, “Pacific Rim” is for you!
In the film, the Kaiju, aliens that are about the size of urban buildings, come to attack earth from below the sea. To fight them, Jaegers, which are giant robots, were created. These are controlled by two pilots. The main character is Raleigh Becket (played by Charlie Hunnam), who is one of these pilots. He has not been in a Jaeger in years, since he was in one with his brother when he died. The Kaiju are doing more and more damage to the planet, and time is running out. Because of this, Raleigh’s old boss, played by Idris Elba, tracks him down and convinces him to rejoin. His new copilot is a woman with no experience, played by Rinko Kikuchi.
This storyline may sound similar to films like “Independence Day” and “Transformers.” But “Pacific Rim” offers more sophisticated back stories for the characters, and the action scenes are replete with color and fantasy. Director Guillermo Del Toro’s goal is to delight, not frighten audiences, and he makes the look of the film amazing. Also, he is great at filming action sequences. The battle scenes are excellent.
The performances in this movie are strong. Idris Elba and Rinko Kikuchi give the best performances in the film. But Ron Perlman, a regular in Guillermo Del Toro movies, is also very good, playing a black marketer, who collects Kaiju body parts.
“Pacific Rim” is a very entertaining film, and if you missed it this summer, be sure to check it out.
