‘The stable boy’ was directed by Dean White. Writers were Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis.
In pre-curse FTL, Young Regina (Lana Parrilla) was being bullied by her mage mom Cora (Barbara Hershey). While henpecked dad (Tony Perez) watches helplessly. Mom has her daughter’s life planned out to the smallest detail. And being with a poor stable boy Daniel (Noah Bean) isn’t included.
Young Regina saves Young Snow White (Bailee Madison) from being injured by a runaway horse. The good deed has an unexpected reward. Snow’s father King Leopold (Richard Schiff) proposes. Cora couldn’t be happier. Her daughter was hit the jackpot. Then she learns about Daniel.
In SB, setting up Mary Margaret (Ginnifer Goodwin) for murder is the latest feature of Regina’s (Lana Parrilla) plot to destroy the woman. Regina outmaneuvers Sheriff Swan (Jennifer Morrison) throughout her investigation. What’s the cause of EQ’s hatred? To quote ‘Don’t Say a Word’ I’ll never tell. This episode reveals a key turning point in her life.
The good: Glimpse into the woman Regina was before she became the Evil Queen. It’s such a joy to see happiness in her life. Didn’t think anyone could be more bubbly than MM. Kudos to Lana Parrilla for adding another layer to her character.
More Noah Bean please. Doesn’t he look like a young David Bowie? Daniel has all the noble qualities we see later in Prince Charming. Daniel and Young Regina were FTL’s first perfect couple. Truly loved the episode. Did producers make a mini me of Ginnifer Goodwin? Bailee Madison is definitely one to watch.
Barbara Hershey takes all of your warm and cuddly memories of Hillary Whitney and turns them into dust. What a revelation! Erica Sayers is a wimp compared to Cora. You just want to hug Young Regina and tell her everything going to be alright. Because you’re secretly plotting Cora’s death.
The bad: And you thought your mother was horrible? Cora is a traumatic experience. No wonder the EQ is SO screwed up. Why didn’t her father have more backbone? He should’ve taken the brunt of Cora’s harsh criticism. So their child didn’t have too. Did Cora need to step on others to feel better about herself?
How long has Cora had magic? Deals? Who do we know that’s FTL version of an evil Monty Hall? Both were trapped in an oppressive environment. They lived with a power hungry maniac who happened to be their wife and mother. Why didn’t Dad escape with Regina before that event? FTL probably didn’t have a family homeless shelter. Did they have family and friends they could stay with?
The ugly: What?!? Forbid Daniel and Regina from seeing each other. Banish him from the estate. Talk about ensuring that she never saw him again. This was when the EQ learned about destroying others happiness. Since she literally had hers ripped away.
