‘Hat Trick’ was directed by Ralph Hemecker. Writers were David H. Goodman and Vladimir Cvetko. In pre-curse FTL, Jefferson (Sebastian Stan) plays hide and seek in the forest with his daughter Grace (Alissa Skovbye).
They sell wild mushrooms. Returning from market, they discover The Evil Queen (Lana Parrilla) waiting. Jefferson tells Grace to hide. The EQ barters. She’ll make them stupid rich for a trip to Wonderland. He turns her down. The last job cost him his wife.
The next day, Grace spies a stuffed rabbit. The merchant refuses Jefferson’s offer. The elderly woman won’t take anything less than full price. Jefferson becomes plagued by guilt. He thinks he’s depriving Grace. He sends her to the neighbors again. He retrieves a hidden hat box then leaves.
He activates the hat opening a portal. He and The EQ jump inside to land in a waiting room filled with doors. Jefferson explains the rules. Whatever number of people goes through the same amount must return. They step through a mirror to enter Wonderland. Their destination is in the center of a maze.
The EQ steals a storage box from the Queen of Heart’s vault. The pair returns to the mirror ahead of guards. But The EQ doesn’t leave yet. She breaks off some mushroom then puts it in the storage box. This releases her father Henry (Tony Perez).
Regina uses magic to glue Jefferson’s boots in place. He’s brought before the QoH. She wants the hat. But The EQ took it. She tells Jefferson if he can make another one he can go home.
In Storybrooke, Mr. Gold (Robert Carlyle) and Emma (Jennifer Morrison) discover MM is gone. Emma goes after her and nearly runs someone (Sebastian Stan) over. She takes the limping stranger home. For some unknown reason he drugs her tea. She wakes up tied up.
She frees herself then accidently finds MM. He kidnapped her as well. He found her in the woods. The Mad Hatter wants the savior to make a hat. So he and Grace can return to FTL. Jefferson tries to stop the ladies from escaping. He’s knocked out a window and disappears. MM returns to her jail cell.
The good: More Mad Hatter and Wonderland please. Who’s the Queen of Hearts? Sebastian Stan knocked it out the park. MH was crazier than a bag of cats. Who is Grace’s mother and what happened to her? Was she a wolf? Grace mentions how she can always find her dad.
What’s the history between EQ and Jefferson? Stargate fans raise your hands. How many thought of the event horizon when they stepped through the mirror?
The bad: The only person worse than The EQ is the QoH. Who is she? Why do they have similar vaults?
The ugly: The EQ trapping Jefferson in Wonderland. The QoH keeping him to make magical portal hats.
