Gather round and listen to a yarn about ye olde Captain Hook. In this episode of Once Upon A Time viewers learned that Hook wasn’t always a bad guy and Losties got an episode chocked full of easter eggs. So unfurl your Pegasus sails and take to the skies for an episode entitled Good Form.
Hook is hot with or without guyliner
Oncers are accustomed to Hook the pirate not Hook the respectable sailor but in this flashback, Hook serves as navigator to his brother and captain, Liam, aboard the king’s ship. They sail the skies to Neverland searching for a plant that heals all wounds and learn that it actually kills thousands. Unfortunately, Liam is the self-appointed guinea pig and nearly dies forcing Peter Pan to intervene. He shows Hook a spring, which heals all wounds and grants eternal youth but warns that like magic, it comes with a price.
Liam recovers and they return to the skies, but he later dies onboard because drinkers of the spring are prohibited from leaving Neverland. So Hook avenges his brother by rebelling against the king, renaming the ship the Jolly Roger and becoming a pirate.
The Fairytale Friends to the rescue
The Fairytale Friends (David, Hook, Emma, Snow and Regina) are starting to worry. While Hook manipulates David into a trek to the spring, the girls are trying to send a message to Henry. They fear that he is losing hope and get confirmation when they meet a Lost Boy who Henry cut in a sword fight. Emma gets desperate and allows Regina to rip the boy’s heart out to control him. They communicate with Henry via a two-way Skype mirror and inform him of their search. Meanwhile, David is cured of his stab wound and unfazed by his fate to remain on Neverland.
A Wicked Proposition
Hook likes Emma and while he resisted Pan’s initial offer to kill David in exchange for free passage off the island, it was difficult to decline the second offer. Pan reveals that he's holding Neal captive on the island, putting Hook in a precarious position. Emma just kissed him as gratitude for saving David’s life and now Hook must choose to either save himself or tell Emma that the love of her life is still alive.
The episode concludes with a drugged Neal being strung up in a wooden box next to a mysterious identical wooden box. Who’s in the other box is anybody’s guess.
It was a fair episode. Oncers saw a good boy go bad and the ladies got plenty of eye candy. Other than that it was you’re standard OUAT bad guy backstory. Good guy turns evil when faced with a bad situation.
The sweet moments were the little easter eggs. How many Losties thought of the series finale of Lost when they saw that spring? Desmond should have popped out and said, “Ay, brother” and pointed the way to the gigantic cork in the middle. Well, at least we know what the island is now.
Then there was the reappearance of the Apollo bar, also made popular in Lost and the revelation that Hook’s brother is named Liam like Charlie’s brother Liam Pace in Lost. The other two non-Lost easter eggs, were Hook uttering “As you wish” to Emma like Westley in The Princess Bride and the flying ship, which was likely inspired by the flying ship in Neil Gaiman’s Stardust. All in all, it was a Lostie’s dream come true. 3 out of 5.
