"Harder Than Hammered Hell" by Otis Gibbs is an extremely satisfying bluesy Americana album.
The fifth song on the record (the one that is cued on Gibbs Bandcamp page) is entitled “Big Whiskers”, and is truly a lyrical triumph. Through bluesy distortion and an Alt. Country backdrop Gibbs gruffly spins us the tale of his Grandpa Winston, who lives his life in pursuit of a legendary catfish with more determination than Captain Ahab after Moby Dick. I won't give away the ending, but let's just say this song will leave anyone smiling by the end.
The following track (entitled: 'Christ Number Three') digs deeper, with a story about soul searching amongst the advice of derelicts claiming messianic importance, and pondering some hard truths that don't require much unearthing.
Altogether “Harder than Hammered Hell” is an album that really succeeds in painting detailed stories with a colorful brush, all the while staying country-fried and dirty cool.
