Brazilian natives Os Mutantes made their way through Minneapolis, stopping to play a show at The Cedar Cultural Center. Openers Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti and Diva took their time with their sets, and Os Mutantes didn't take the stage until a little after 1:00.
Diva was a one woman show - a lady and her bass and a mix tape playing along. Formerly of Pocahaunted and BlackBlack, she wore a black unitard and sang out of key. She snag the wrong words with her final song, a cover of "Will you still love me tomorrow?". The crowd had themselves a unanimous sigh of relief with the final round of applause.
Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti was, well, odd. But that was to be expected. They took the stage and played through two songs or so before lead singer stopped the show to take some prescription pills. "I need to take my meds so I need a beer. Can you get me a beer?" he asked around. He overused the sound effect on a plastic toy ray-gun throughout their set. When they were on, they were on and the sound was good. They could have done without the delay on every instrument and every microphone.
The reunited and reinvented Os Mutantes were amazing. They came on stage in traditional garb and with great big smiles, playing for a little over an hour. New songs and old, English and Portuguese. It was indeed a wonderful cultural experience. The highlight of the show was their performance of well-known and loved song "A Minha Menina", and their finale really got the crowd moving. Definitely a must see band.
