It’s hard to believe that in a few short days it will be the 12th anniversary of 9/11 when two planes flew into the World Trade Center, another one hitting the Pentagon and another one hitting a field in Pennsylvania where thousands were killed and so many lives were changed from that fateful day filled with evil.
Karen Kingsbury turned her fictional novel One Tuesday Morning into a Christian novel about two men that were affected by the horrific events of 9/11. One is a firefighter. The other is a successful business mogul but not a success in his family life. One dies and the other’s life changes forever.
The story starts out about a week before the tragedy of 9/11 where the reader catches glimpses of the characters in the novel and how they live their lives. Eric, who lost his faith when his daughter was born stillborn, does not have a relationship with his eight-year-old son Josh. He signs his son’s birthday card as: Take care, Dad. He consistently breaks promises to his family by choosing work over family. Jake is the devoted firefighter who curls his daughter’s hair, gives her horsey back rides and a Christian who wants nothing more than to meet his wife who is not a Christian in heaven.
For many, the events of 9/11 reshaped their lives as it did for the characters of One Tuesday Morning. Kingsbury captured the essence of what life for a firefighter is about: firefighters calling other firefighters brothers and their station a second home is emotional.
One Tuesday Morning is about love, second chances, what ifs; make us appreciative of life and for us to realize that our lives here on planet earth are just one big waiting room.
