In the great tradition of cautionary tales, comes this week’s Once Upon A Time episode, It’s Not Easy Being Green. Previously, it was established that Zelena is Regina’s sister in Fairytale Land but now the truth is revealed in Storybrooke and the backstory of Zelena is explored in a Fairytale Land flashback. Find out why Zelena turned green, why everybody rejected her and hopefully learn a valuable lesson about envy.
Green with envy
In Oz, Zelena is displaying powers while still in diapers. A hooded woman, who is supposed to be Cora, drops her off in the forest and leaves her for dead. An old couple finds her and adopts her but the father is aware of her powers and despises her for the entirety of her life. By the time she’s grown Zelena runs off to the wizard to discover her true origin. He reveals that Cora gave her up because she wanted a daughter who could be queen and Zelena was never going to be able to do that for her. He gives Zelena a pair of slippers that can take her anywhere if she clicks them three times but warns her about wanting things that she cannot have.
Zelena travels to Fairytale Land and meets Rumplestiltskin. She reveals who she is and he trains her but she fails a test. She’s envious of Regina and tries to kill Rumplestiltskin disguised as her. This disqualifies her from casting the curse and eventually turns her pretty, strawberry skin green. She retreats to the Wizard and discovers that the man behind the curtain is Walsh,v Emma’s old fiance. She turns him into her flying monkey and he becomes her minion charged with helping her change the past.
Back in Storybrooke a battle royale is brewing. The town lays Neal to rest and Zelena challenges Regina to a dual. She gives her the remainder of the day to discover the truth of their shared parentage before they fight to the death. Regina finds a letter and discovers that Zelena is in fact her sister and that she is a more powerful witch than she is.
Nighttime comes and the fight fizzles into a way for Zelena to literally steal Regina’s heart but Regina is clever enough to hide it. She gives it to Robin Hood, proving that she is cunning and finally ready for love but this story brings up a good point.
A cautionary tale
Every villain has a fatal flaw and Zelena’s fatal flaw is her failure to accept her part to play in life. She mentioned that she was just a bit player when she was applying to be Snow’s midwife and in this episode its revealed that she possessed the talent but not the control necessary to lead. This must have been incredibly frustrating for her. Think about it. Your sister possesses less knowledge than you but has the control to lead. She has a choice to help her or to fight her and she chooses to fight. It’s understandable but it’s a losing battle. She was never going to be her sister but she could have had a position in the palace. Regina may have been vengeful at the time but she had no quarrels with her sister. Zelena’s presence could have prevented the curse and both girls could have been happy instead of one becoming evil and the other becoming wicked.
