5th Avenue Sandwich Shop

Oh, the sammy, the simplest and most quaint of foods. Less of a rebel than its charred cousin the hamburger, the sandwich is as versatile a food as Meryl Streep is an actor. Its culinary category contains as many classics as the black and white movie genre, from grilled cheese to club to BLT to PB&J to— good god the list goes on and my mind’s stomach only serves to expand in longing. There are several fond memories of my recalling that I can say included, nay, were enhanced by the presence of a sandwich. In my formative days as a young college student I derived great pleasure from the fact that one of the buildings on campus offered the opportunity for students to make themselves a peanut butter and jelly sandwich any time of the day. When I was hoofing the streets of London on a mad museum dash I worked myself into such ravenous hunger that the elementary turkey sandwich I scarfed at the Tate gallery café was as decadent a meal to me as a smattering of fine cheese and a smear of caviar.
Even the most subpar of sandwiches can satisfy deeply under the right circumstances. So then it need not be said that a well-crafted one can cause a diner to absolutely revel in their consumption. A sandwich of such quality may be found at the local Olympia establishment known as the 5th Avenue Sandwich Shop. Its name serves to explain in the plainest of terms its location and purpose. It is a humble moniker that belies the exceptional sandwiches served inside. Every good restaurant has their secret recipes, their shticks. The 5th Ave. has their famous homemade bread, said to be a family recipe. In this post-Wonder Bread universe, a carb of fresh and sincere origins is a rare delight, like sighting a whale fin in misty Northern waters. The bread’s inclusion combined with its various fixings elevates the finished product to a level of merit rarely achieved by handheld foods. Furthermore, they offer several options to choose from: white, wheat, sourdough, jalapeno, etc.
Try anything on the menu; it is most likely to satisfy. Soups and homemade pies included. In a world where such a term as “sandwich artist” exists, consider those layering ingredients away at 5th Ave. to be among the masters.
