It was with mild curiosity that I looked into a band that by name and album name had me hit play on the EPK and await the screams, noise, and things that get old real quick at times. Thankfully, I could not have been more wrong.
The first track Fire In Your Eyes started out with a cool electric acoustic riff that moments later gave way to an almost bluesy-metal blend. I did a double take to make sure this wasn’t an old Black Sabbath track. No, still the is new band, new to all of us anyway.
They are Raven Black Night and their new album courtesy Metal Blade Records is entitled Barbarian Winter. All those parts had me expecting a death/kill/hate assault; not at all. As I said above, these guys have an old school metal sound that has been missing for too long. The band actually hails from the same place that AC/DC discovered Bon Scott in Adelaide, Australia.
This entire album just knocks you into the old way of banging your head along with the drums and hoisting a lighter high in the air, horns up sign with the other. Morbid Gladiator, the second track, continues to remind you of old Sabbath with the over distorted deep low end tones but bring some Deep Purple to mind with the vocalists screams, not growls, old school wails.
These guys have earned their way here and anyone that knows the godfathers of heavy metal and the gloom/doom almost bluesy feel to it will love these guys. The album never gives in to anything else; they just attack your nerve system and you feel like metal went home at last. Aside from massive touring and earning accolades in Europe they did record the old school way and fought their way into a contract. Go buy this album as it will belong on the same shelf as AC/DC, early Black Sabbath, and Deep Purple.
