The Crossroads was bursting at the seams last night when Old Crow Medicine Show came to Kansas City. Reviving the roots of bluegrass, the six-piece band brought a huge crowd of folk music lovers from all around the Kansas City area to the big, open, outdoor venue. Families, old folks and party people of all ages came together for the two epic sets, enjoying a show of power-house roots.
Old Crow Medicine Show is an old-time string band, that plays pre-World War II blues and folk tunes as well as alternative country and americana music. The band's combination of stand-up bass, guitar, harmonica, banjo and mandolin conjures a sense of old fashioned american music not heard since the medicine shows that traveled the country from the last turn of the century to the 1940s.
For last nights performance the band exhibited the skill and energy that has made them a national icon of American roots music, playing two long sets of fantastic bluegrass that kept their audience thrilled all night. Even the next day dedicated bluegrass fans were gushing over what a terrific show it was.
Before the first set was finished the Crossroads was already packed with fans, but the second set was when the band brought out the big guns. "Wagon Wheel", the band's signature song had the entire mob singing along. The guys followed that with "Cocaine Habit", which had the crowd roaring with approval.
After their finale, the band barely got a moment's pause as the audience shrieked for more. A three song encore was the cherry on top that finished off the show on a satisfying note. The only strange part of this show was that it was a Wednesday night, so the first set started early and the encore was over by 11 p.m. A weekend show might have gone on longer, but the music could not possibly be better than this classic showcase of roots music at its finest.
