Oh what a crust

Located in a small plaza at 545 Titus Ave. in Irondequoit, 2 Ton Tony's has been voted the town's favorite pizza and one bite tells you why. Tony Proietti is a third generation pizza maker and has learned his family recipes well.

Tony greets you at the counter, takes your order and sets to work. There is no oven in sight, so when he places the slice on a paper plate and disappears around a corner into the kitchen, one worries that he is going to put it in a microwave; not to worry, this slice has no sign of being nuked.

Returning with the slice you will notice that it is now cut in two and occupies two paper plates, otherwise better than half of it would hang off the edge. Although it could be served a little bit hotter, the warmed slice gives off a wonderful aroma of rich sauce. The slice, along with a bottle of soda-pop costs $5.67, a bit more than some places, but there is a lot more pizza than you get at those places, so it works out.

This slice is huge, at least 12" from tip to crust, yet, when you pick it up, it is not limp, but remains rigid. The first bite is a very pleasant surprise. The crust is crispy, but not overly so; it is substantial, yet not overly thick or chewy. The sauce, though aromatic and delicious is rather acidic.

Perhaps cutting the amount of sauce in half is in order, because too much of Tony's pizza could definitely lead to heart burn. The cheese was good, although, as previously stated, the pizza would benefit from a bit more heating time, as the cheese did not seem to be properly melted. Tony is liberal with the pepperoni, providing a slice in practically every bite.

Besides offering a generous slice, 2 Ton Tony's has a long list of pizza toppings, calzones, wings, 2 Ton Plates which are his version of the (in)famous Garbage Plate, as well as an extensive catering menu. Look him up at www.266tony.com for the full menu. He is also on facebook 2tontonyspizza and twitter @2ontonys.

Whether you have it delivered, pick it up yourself or sit down in the restaurant and try to find your favorite spots in Irondequoit depicted on the walls, you will have a great slice and more at 2 Ton Tony's.
