Broadway Global shares the exclusive on the new off-Broadway musical that has stolen Tony Award nominations thunder. "Heathers The Musical" already has a huge arts cult following, some from the famed 80's movie Heathers, and many more from social media - word of mouth. The relevant story of bullying, homosexuality, suicides has won the recognition from Drama Desk Awards to Lucille Lortel Awards. Even Broadway Global's nominations would be different if "Heathers the Musical" was in this Tony Awards mix. But, No worries when this explosive new musical moves to Broadway it is sure to have numerous Tony Award nominations. "Don't miss the most explosive new musical of the season! "Heathers kill it!" Theatre Chat.
A new name to Broadway theatre lovers, that by the way, you will never forget after seeing her performance is Barrett Wibert Weed (Heathers the Musical). Barrett Wilbert Weed is being recognized among Broadway's finest - Sutton Foster (Violet), Idina Menzel (If/Then), Jessica Mueller (Beautiful the Carol King Musical), and Margo Seibert (Tamar of the River). Weed's unique power vocals with heart pounding acting have taken "Heathers" Broadway buzz to new heights, for young theatre lovers. The connection between young theatre lovers is death defying! "Heathers the Musical" is Broadway bound! It's been a killer season with A Gentlemens Guide to Love and Murder, Bullets Over Broadway and now "Heathers The Musical" explodes off Broadway taken all Tony Award buzz to next years possibilities.
"Heathers the Musical" Choreographer, Margueritte Derricks has also been recognized, nominated for a Lucille Lortel Award. Without misquoting one of Broadway most talented choreographers Margueritte Derricks (Emmy Awards, Wonderland, A Class Act, Cirque du Soleil's Zummanity) I will share some of Derricks' thoughts on why "Heathers the Musical" has stolen the thunder of Broadway's biggest Tony Award nominated musicals of the season. I had to speak with Margueritte about the project, because truthfully I did not want to see another made from movie musical this season, among all the big budget Broadway film to stage productions. Well, thanks to South Florida's most respected theatre Critic Bill Hirschman I was enticed to take in this twisted piece of explosive music and cleverly produced story.
Hope, is the key success for this new controversial musical, racking in theatre patrons of all ages. The High School groups that are filling the seats, and bursting with nightly standing ovations are the lucky ones. Those young audiences that have stayed through the entire comedic, true to life journey of our youth are connecting to Heathers. Dealing with daily youth issues of bullying, homosexuality and even suicide are on the news daily, if you can't embrace the issues of today, what musical or arts forms do you want your children to be inspired by? For those parents, teachers, High School groups that leave "Heathers the Musical" at intermission, you have missed the journey of this twisted, entertaining pop-operatic inspiration giving hope to our youth story.
The casting of Asian powerhouse Alice Lee (Heather Duke) instead of following movie casting of three white girls, is dead on! Its not about color or race. We all have had those bullies in life. The twisted story of deception, death and suicide is embraced as a parody, as the audiences burst with laughter, when Alice Lee can't out smart the child proof cap, to finish her suicide. The solo music is supported through operatic pop like choral vocals, sounding much like "Chess", "Miss Saigon" or newer musicals like "Legally Blond". The lyrics as cutting as "Next to Normal" or make this new musical take form like Disney's "High School the Musical" on twisted steroids. Yes, your going to witness "Book of Mormon" in your face, out right, amoral humor. It is the final message of Heathers that we as arts loves embrace, to find ones inner beauty that is within us all.
You would think that with Andy Cohen listed as a producer the journey of Heathers from Film to stage would be easy, but truth is the musical took seven years to get it to off Broadway. The connection between young audiences is powerful message for the future of theatre. If we are to introduce live theatre to young audiences we must sometime include uncomfortable issues they hear about on a daily basis. "Heathers the Musical" has been a joyful ride for one of Broadway's most talented choreographers Margueritte Derricks, because the credited NYC theatre lovers like LortellAwards and Drama Desk Awards nominators have embraced the journey of hope that explodes it's finale.
Much like Rock of Ages off Broadway start, Heathers the Musical has found its audience with our younger theatre lover. The live band keeps the movement, energy of the show truthful. Sometimes off-Broadway takes the cheapest way out with click tracks, that is not the case with Heathers the Musical. The production value of sets, lights and sound are equal, if not surpass Broadway's best Tony Award nominated musicals this season. "Broadway Global theatre investors, jump on Board now, this musical wins at the box office!" Theatre Chat.
