New York City is loaded with musicians all striving to be heard, and once in a while, you come across a metal band that actually makes you listen. Last Legion, a local band that draws their lyrical themes from Norse mythology and celestial war, successfully combines this with a dark, musical brutality that assaults your eardrums in a pleasing manner. They refer to their genre as "Blackened Viking Metal" and it describes them perfectly.
Founded in 2010, Last Legion is made up of musicians from across the five boroughs: Jason Ayala on vocals, Christopher Sampath on guitar, Martin Tune on bass, and Adam Bauch on drums. They are influenced by bands like Amon Amarth, Immortal, Cannibal Corpse, and Opeth. In their song "Valkyria", you can definitely hear these influences, but their work breaks free of the chains and displays originality.
When we asked guitarist Chris Sampath what the band's plans are for 2014, he said, "[Last Legion] will be in the studio working on new tunes for another CD, and we will be performing all around the tri-state area! As for our sound, we are expanding our writing, incorporating more solos and harmonies, which I think make our sound epic."
In fact, the only thing that Last Legion is truly missing is a terrific, professional music video. However, they have plenty of videos of their gigs online, and these prove that their sound isn't just "studio produced." They actually maintain their powerful sound and vocals on stage.
