NYC Girl: the ultra-catchy funk of The Orion Experience

NYC Girl by The Orion Experience begins with the title track, which is a great example of what this band is all about. The guitar is reminiscent of both The Jackson 5 and Sly and the Family Stone. The chorus is pretty heavily influenced by disco. It's pretty easy to imagine this in a blaxploitation film, except it's too sunny to be considered B-A-D.
The opening track is followed by "Emerald Eyes." This song is ridiculously catchy. I mean, this is the sort of song that can get lodged in your head for an entire day...and you probably won't mind it. It took some thinking, but I finally figured out who this song reminds me of: The Cat Empire. It has that same kind of fun, funky vibe. And you know something? That is not the only song on the album that might get stuck in your head all day. "Rollercoaster" is the kind of song that you might find yourself singing hours after you heard it.

I've never been in the studio with The Orion Experience, but I think I've figured out the band's recipe. Take one part 70s R&B and add an equal part of rock. Add a dash of disco and sunny pop and what you have is a song by The Orion Experience. This EP is a great example of what an EP should do: namely, get you interested in more songs by the band.
