While visiting San Luis Obispo one must include a stop at Novo Restaurant & Lounge with its eclectic flavors and pleasant creekside setting. The restaurant is situated in the heart of downtown and offers a diverse selection of wines and cuisine.

Novo Restaurant & Lounge one of San Luis Obispo's most popular restaurants.

Having been to San Luis Obispo many times but always missing out on the chance to try this restaurant that is owned by the same owners as Luna Red in San Luis Obispo and Robin’s in Cambria, I finally enjoyed a delightful evening with my husband sitting out on the patio recently.

The patios overlooking the San Luis Creek are what make Novo a unique experience. With the twinkling white lights and heat lamps going to keep you toasty, the restaurant draws you in. It is a must to eat outside, weather permitting. In fact if you have a dog in tow, the restaurant like most places in San Luis Obispo is dog friendly and allows your four legged kids to join you on the patio.

Novo has a nice extensive wine list featuring mainly California wines with a smattering of international wines. Having just been to Argentina, I was impressed to see one of the wineries I had visited, the Renacer Punto Final Malbec on the list. My husband and I choose to just have a glass of 2012 Belle Glos“Meiomi,”Pinot Noir. This was a very balanced full-bodied fruit forward Pinot Noir with hints of cherries.

My husband started with a Salmon Bisque. This recipe is a special from Robin’s in Cambria. The light creamy savory soup accents the mild salmon flavors. It is a definite on a cool day.

Our main course was a Braised Lamb Shank with white beans, kale and butternut squash stew. It also comes with toasted crostini, which we left off. The dish was extremely flavorful and perfect for a winter’s evening. Being a hearty entrée it did not leave you wanting more.

Although we were full by the time dessert came around. we eyed the menu and if there had been room for more, I would have chosen the Pumpkin Bread Pudding.

I do recommend a reservation because Novo is always busy as it is one of San Luis Obispo’s most popular dining destinations.
