Tired of the humdrum films of winter? Universal Pictures ‘Non-Stop’ starring Liam Neeson will cure your winter blues with an adrenaline rush.
In the film, U.S. Air Marshall Bill Marks (Liam Neeson) hates flying and spends most of his days drinking in an attempt to forget his unraveling life. During a transatlantic flight from New York City to London, Marks receives a series of cryptic text messages demanding that he instruct the airline to transfer $150 million into an off-shore account. If he fails to make the transfer, a passenger on his flight will be killed every twenty minutes. Marks set out to find the threat and save the passengers on the plane.
Neeson is the undisputed king of action thrillers with his steely gaze and take charge voice, along with his no-nonsense martial art skills. Audiences expect that when he is cast as the protagonist hero in a film, he will raise the bar in the action arena. Although his 'Non-Stop' character is flawed, it is this defect that adds a level of suspense to the goings on. In fact, it cast a shadow of doubt as to whether or not he is up to the task of taking on the terrorists. Fear not, ‘Non-Stop’ will not disappoint. Before you know it, your heart will be leaping from your chest as Neeson executes some kick butt moves.
Julianne Moore (‘Carrie’) as passenger Jen Summers creates an air of mystery. Her solid performance adds to the uncertainty on the plane. As she willingly helps look for the perpetrator, one is not quite sure if she is really as good as she appears to be.
Fans of ‘Downton Abbey’ will undoubtedly like seeing the familiar face of Michelle Dockery (Nancy). As a flight attendant, she has a substantial amount of screen time as the movie progresses. Yet, to my disappointment, Lupita Nyong’o (’12 Years a Slave’) is relegated to a few lines. Despite her being new on the acting scene, and given her abilities, I expected her to have a larger part. After all, someone of her caliber surely would have enhanced the storyline. It is certainly, an opportunity missed.
‘Non-Stop’ is a suspense-filled thriller that keeps you guessing until the very end. The heightened atmosphere on the plane strikes a chord in this post 9-11 world. The action feels like a roller coaster riding along the rails of your nerves. Just when you think you have the mystery solved, another twist sends you reeling with heightened emotions.
The talented cast includes Liam Neeson, Julianne Moore, Scoot McNairy, Michelle Dockery, Nate Parker, Jason Butler Harner, Lupita Nyong’o and Anson Mount.
‘Non-Stop’ opens in theaters February 28, 2014. It is rated Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of action and violence, some language, sensuality and drug references. It has a run time of 106 minutes.
