The year 2014 is still young; yet, this author’s favorite product so far is NOMAD’s ChargeKey (preorder price of $25; available in Lightning and Micro USB versions).

According to the company, this is the most diminutive USB charging cable in the world (i.e., approximate dimensions of 6.5 cm in length by 2 cm at its widest point)!

While the product is slightly larger than one of the author’s traditional keys, the ChargeKey is significantly shorter than Apple’s stock Lightning to USB Cables that vary from 0.5 m to 2 m in length. Thus, this product easily fits on a keychain. Moreover, the plastic composition allows for an impressive amount of cable flexibility but is still sturdy enough to endure collisions with metal keys.

By fitting on this author’s keyring, it is more likely to be present with him “on the go” than a full-sized charging cable. In fact, the ChargeKey has already turned out to be useful in recharging this author’s smartphone, when it unexpectedly and inconveniently discharged to zero battery. In addition to charging, the ChargeKey acts as a USB cable, thereby, allowing data transfer when connected to a computer (i.e., a quality not shared by all third-part Lightning cables).

In addition to bartering for their products, NOMAD also allows individuals to “earn” a free ChargeKey or ChargeCard by various imaginative endeavors (e.g., naming one’s Wi-Fi router “hellonomad.com” for a month, changing one’s profile picture to NOMAD’s logo, etc.). One downside to owning a smart device is developing a plan for keeping it powered. NOMAD’s products return the freedom to roam without a leash in the form of a power cable.
