Roots Run Deep Winery, the wizards who craft Educated Guess varietals, recently released two outstanding varietals that celebrate the past harvests and a firm glaze on the present.
“Although we focused on what 2013 will bring, we can’t help but enjoy looking back at 2011 and 2012 – two very different but rewarding vintages,” said proprietor Mark Albrecht. “Despite some challenges, we were very happy with the quality of the fruit as reflected in these two wines.
“The Napa Valley chardonnay ($17) is my go-to wine when I’m entering a crowd,” he said. “This is versatile, balanced with enough acidity to keep it refreshing pass the first glass and enough subtle oak to satisfy traditional chard lovers.”
This chardonnay is amazing in that it “walks” a fine line between butter sticks and marked fruit acidity. Each sip begs another and pairs beautifully with a myriad of dishes such as crab cakes or Asian fare.
Educated Guess’ Napa Valley Carneros pinot noir ($25) is elegant with lush fruit nuances to balance bright acidity. This handcrafted wine slept 12 months in French oak. In the glass it is deep garnet hued with aromas of ripe strawberry and red cherry. Hints of spice and cola add an explosion of wild berry with firm tannins in the finish.
Add some spice of your own and pair this with smoked duck breast with cherry sauce.
