The Nissan Titan PRO-4X 4x4 may be one of the better performing and best value off-road capable sport trucks in the segment today based on our recent test drive of a very well equipped 2013 Titan PRO-4X Crew Cab 4x4.
Our test truck, in a Graphite Blue exterior with a Charcoal interior, listed a MSRP of $39,240 and had the following options included: PRO-4X Premium Utility Package ($1,500), PRO-4X Luxury Package ($2,630) and embroidered PRO-4X Floor Mats ($150).
With delivery, our 2013 Titan PRO-4X Crew Cab 4x4 SB (short bed) was priced at $44,615, which is below many of its competitors comparably equipped with similar off-road capability.
Titan pickup trucks from Nissan have trailed the competition badly in sales overall in recent years for several reasons. Most often cited are a dated interior (no notable refresh since introduction in 2004), fewer choices of cabs (no regular cab), no V-6 engine option (V-8 only) and fuel economy ratings slightly less than some of the other competitors.
Having gotten that out of the way, today's full-size Nissan Titan is still a very solid and strong performing truck.
Despite those criticisms, the Titan has a reputation among followers for being rugged and reliable with a range of innovation features, including the first-in-class Utili-track cargo-carrying system, available durable spray-on bed liner, lockable bedside storage compartment, Wide-Open rear doors (King Cab) and the longest Crew Cab bed in its class.
There are four trim level models available in Titan. They are the S, SV, PRO-4X and SL.
For 2013 (and 2014 as no changes are announced) Titan continues as a truck designed to get the job done, whether that job is hauling cargo, a trailer or just family and friends to the mountains, lake or beach.
In our opinion, the PRO-4X does the best job of all of the available Titan models getting that done.
With enhancements to the PRO-4X model for 2013, it now stands out among its competition for value (MSRP $39,240) and a rugged capability while being outfitted with features and functionality equal to or exceeding others.
The 2013 Titan PRO-4X comes with some new standard equipment and a refreshed exterior appearance. New in 2013 are revised graphics, satin chrome grille, dark wheel finish, a new tailgate design with aerodynamic rear spoiler and bright silver-finish lower radiator skid plate. There is also a revised interior appearance with white stitching accents (previously red), new logo design and Titan embroidery for cloth seats (leather-appointed seats maintain PRO-4X embroidery)
The Titan PRO-4X features an identifying decal over the rear fenders and a number of other exterior trim components to achieve a sportier look, along with the innovative lockable bedside storage compartment, splash guards and auto on/off headlights.
PRO-4X performance equipment includes Rancho performance shock absorbers, a lower final drive ratio (3.357), additional skid plates on the oil pan and transfer case, an Electronic Locking Rear Differential and unique 18-inch dark finish aluminum-alloy off-road wheels with off-road style center caps and largest-in-class BFGoodrich Rugged Trail 275/70R18 all-terrain tires.
The PRO-4X interior has other styling cues that differentiate it from the rest of the Titan lineup including white-face meters and gauges and white-stitched shifter knob and steering wheel.
Standard features and equipment on our PRO-4X included Dual Front Captain's Chairs with 8-Way Power Driver Seat, Fold Flat Front Passenger Seat, 60/40 Split Rear Flip-up Bench Seat (vertical for cargo storage on the flat floor), Multi-functional Center Console with 120 Volt Power Outlet, Steering Wheel Audio and Cruise Controls, Rear Sonar System, a RearView Monitor, the widest power down/up rear bed access cab window we have ever seen, Front Tow Hooks, Tow Hitch Receiver with 7-pin Wiring Harness and Black Splash Guards.
Also standard on the PRO-4X are a 4.3-inch Color Display Audio/USB/Satellite radio with AM/FM/CD 8-speaker Audio, MP3 CD and ROM Playback, Bluetooth Handsfree Phone System and Auxiliary Input Jacks.
Moon roof and DVD Packages are now added to the list of available item options for the PRO 4-X plus the exclusive PRO-4X Premium Utility Package and PRO-4X Luxury Packages.
The PRO-4X Premium Utility Package includes the Rockford Fosgate Premium Audio System, HomeLink Universal Transceiver, Rear Overhead Console, Power Adjustable Pedals, Utili-track Bed Channel System, Tailgate Area Bed Illumination and a 120V power Point, Spray-in Bedliner and Heated Extending Tow Mirrors.
The PRO-4X Luxury Package adds Leather-appointed Heated Front Seats, 4-way Power Passenger Seat, Driver’s Seat Memory System including Mirrors and Pedals, In-cabin Microfilter and NissanConnect with Navigation.
All Titans are built on Nissan's rugged F-Alpha pickup platform and feature the powerful 5.6-liter DOHC Endurance V8 rated at 317 horsepower and 385 lb.-ft. torque mated to a standard 5-speed automatic transmission. Titan has a maximum towing capacity of up to 9,500 pounds for King Cab and 9,400 pounds for Crew Cab (when properly equipped).
Titans feature a 28-gallon fuel tank, providing a decent driving range of near 400 miles with its EPA fuel economy rating (PRO-4X 4x4) of 12/17 MPG City/Highway and average of 14 MPG.
Titan's 5-speed automatic transmission is designed especially for truck use that enables serious towing and smooth shift quality. A transmission temperature gauge is included in the meter cluster on SV, PRO-4X and SL models. An Active Brake Limited-Slip Differential (2-wheel or 4-wheel) is standard on both 4x2 and 4x4 models.
All Titans use an all-steel double wishbone front suspension design and overslung leaf spring (dual rate) rear suspension with shackles mounted along the frame sides to increase departure angle. Power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering is standard, along with 4-wheel disc brakes with Bosch Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist and Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC).
The PRO-4X Titan comes in 4x4 only. Titan 4x4 models adapt an advanced shift-on-the-fly 4-wheel drive system with 2WD/4HI/4LO modes with electronic control part-time transfer case to deliver traction off-road or when hauling a load or even towing a trailer - when it is needed such as on a boat ramp.
When looking for a rugged and off-road capable pickup truck, take a look at the Nissan PRO-4X. You will be hard pressed to find more value for the money anywhere else.
