Night Tide (1961): A Dennis Hopper film review

Night Tide a horror film to some but more like a mystery with some fantasy involved. If you like films about lore surrounding the sea then this is a great picture for you. It's a dreamy film that starred a young Dennis Hopper and takes place in a small seaside town. The film reminds me of Carnival Souls but not as spooky. Hopper played a young sailor on leave that falls in love with a mysterious woman posing as a mermaid for the local carnival. It was Curtis Harrington's first feature film and he was known for avant-garde films.

I always wonder why I found this certain film so appealing probably because it's very odd, first time I seen it was the Ned the Dead show which was my favorite Saturday night program , love the jazz scenes reminds me of the beatnik culture and Dennis Hopper makes the film appealing. It's an indie film or low budget depends what you want to call it.

It's a dreamy and surreal film that holds interest because Hopper's character keeps searching for more about this woman and what exactly is happening. See she is suspected of killing her last boyfriends though there is no proof. The twists in the film are like watching Twilight Zone or the Outer Limits.

It's creative though wrongly marketed as a horror film but that's for the viewer to decide. I think it's somewhat underrated and looked at just a low budget film in fact it has many good qualities. Sure at times the film is slow to get to the point but the coastal view is appealing to the viewer, the acting is not bad and the plot holds up. Dennis Hopper fans will want to add this to their film collection. It's a strange film that captivates viewers.
