Have we been living in a cave? Hardly. But Nicole Sassaman somehow escaped our radar until now when we heard she had a new book out called, 100 Sassy Tips: Renovations. Sassamon, we’re told, put in over two decades of buying, rehabbing and selling real estate in Los Angeles—some of the more upscale areas—and it shows in this book.
While you may not be able to afford high price point furnishings, high-end cabinetry, and foundational tile and marble, there are some reasons to look at this book. One, good decorating, no matter the price, trains the eye. When you recognize what proper design and spatial planning looks like, you can apply it to your own aesthetic, no matter how much money you have. You just may become savvy at “creating” the look using lower priced goods and products.
Secondly, a flipper like Sassaman knows what areas and projects add value to a home. If you have a limited budget, choose to do the things that will be “desired” and use traditional colors and products that are considered staples, instead of out-there, singular design that no one else can get behind but you.
If you are into modernism, clear spare design and clean lines; if you like basic, transitional colors and mood, if you want to create more light; and if you need help in space planning—this is the book for you.
Take some time to visit her website and walk through her gallery of previous jobs, we think you will find some valuable ideas. If nothing else, you will realize how clutterless and spare in both selection and furnishings is desirable for a high-end look. We always learn something of value in the “before” and “after” segments on a site: One, that everything takes more time, money and effort than first imagined, and Two, that the feeling of a room can be transformed if you know how to add architectural details.
