Nico Apple and Sean Patrick Sullivan: 'No Birds' (2012)

“No Birds” by Nico Apple and Sean Patrick Sullivan is a very warm and textural lo-fi single.

The vocals are distant (yet clear) and effected... sounding icy with a hint of crackle... truly fragile. Thematically the lyrics meander on the stoic emptiness of life, while adding the sentiment that “too sad to live, too in love to die”. The message may be a sad one, but it's a good sad.

The instrumentals are very lo-fi, with guitars and tone textures doused in reverb that flow around a dreamy production, a trademark of Sullivan, very fitting to the words and voice of Apple.

Overall the feel of the track creates a very melancholy ambiance that's not only pleasing to the ear, but also makes for a very relaxing listen that has more substance to it than just straight instrumental ambient music.
