True crime author and journalist Cathy Scott can add another success to her bookshelf with "The Millionaire's Wife." This story has all the lurid details of what makes a murder, including revenge, greed, money, a scorned wife, and a younger girlfriend.

Forty-nine-year-old George Kogan was the beloved son of Holocaust survivors. He grew up in Puerto Rico before making his way to New York City, where he found the American Dream of success as an antiques and art dealer. Then one morning, as he was on his way to his girlfriend's home in 1990, George was approached on the street by an unidentified gunman who shot him to death.

Mary-Louise Hawkins was twenty-eight years old and had once worked as George’s publicist. But ever since they became lovers, George’s estranged wife, Barbara, was consumed with all things a scorned woman feels: anger, sadness, bitterness, hate, and love. Barbara and George hashed out a divorce, and yet another emotion wove its way into their lives: greed. Then a judge turned down her request for $5,000 a week in alimony.

Barbara, who stood to collect $4.3 million in life insurance, was immediately suspected in George’s death. And indeed she was guilty. But it appeared she would walk away unscathed.

This was one of those crimes where investigators refused to stop working. Twenty years later, the ugly truth came to light: a link between Barbara, her lawyer, Manuel Martinez, and the hitman who killed George.

Barbara eventually pled guilty to charges of grand larceny, conspiracy to commit murder, and murder in the first degree.

In "The Millionaire's Wife"Cathy Scott answers the questions: what creates a murder? What is the strongest emotion? And does money truly buy happiness?
