For lodging in Taos, there’s little that can surpass Palacio de Marquesa. Formerly the Casa de las Chimeneas, this intimate 8 room luxury inn is located near Taos Plaza in a tranquil garden-filled setting. It is now owned by Heritage Hotels, a New Mexico-based company with some of the more upscale and charming hotels in the state.

The rooms of the Palacio de Marquesa are arranged along pathways and around a courtyard providing more of a sense of being part of a private residence, perhaps even a hacienda than a hotel. The decor of all the rooms is light, bright, with whites, greys, and silver tones predominating. There's also a bit of whimsy -- the phones appear to be old-fashioned rotary dialed phones incarnated in silver, and the faucets have the silhouette of old-style fixtures.

The room in which I stayed had a gas-fired kiva, heated floors, and a large inviting marble shower. All rooms come with a coffee maker and fridge (and not a mini bar), free WiFi, and plush robes.

A full breakfast is included and available in the guest's room (and some rooms come with a lovely private patio), or in the Palacio de Marquesa great room – a combination living room and dining room that easily lured me to dine with the other guests at the large comfortable communal table. Guests select their breakfast the night before and indicate the time they'd like to dine.

Each room is dedicated to one of the remarkable women of Taos, making this delightful Inn an introduction to a bit of a history of Taos.

Palacio de Marquesa expects to host special events including events including chef’s dinners, artist workshops and guest speakers.
Massage services are available in-room.

The result is lodging that feels as intimate as a B&B but with the privacy and amenities of a luxury hotel. To me, a winning combination.
