New MapleStory content, "Root Abyss"

MapleStory has been a popular free-to-play MMO for years. In case you haven’t heard of it, here’s a link to the global version website. The Root Abyss update on January 16, 2013, will remind players of Alice in Wonderland. There are four bosses, who will be described in detail later, and each has its own fight pattern. MapleStory is known for pumping out several updates, but how does this one fair?

Shortly before the launch of Root Abyss, Nexon posted a developer interview on their site which can be found here. Each boss has a hat that it can drop and can be completed on normal and chaos modes. Players can do normal mode at level 100 and chaos at level 140; however, the normal mode boss must be defeated 10 times before chaos is unlocked. That means it will take 10 days from the launch of the content before chaos mode is available because players can only defeat each boss once a day.

Now it’s time for the bosses themselves. After the introductory quests, the Mysterious Girl NPC will give the player a quest to defeat the first boss, otherwise known as Seal Guardian. This first boss is called Von Bon and is basically an evil chicken with a monocle. He will do a projectile attack, disappear, and a slam attack. Light and dark clocks are also summoned throughout the fight. If players attack while in a light clock, they will take damage. After he is defeated, players can turn in the quest and get one for the second boss. Each boss will have a quest for defeating it.

The second boss, Pierre, looks like a jester or clown. He will randomly change the color of his hat and players will receive a random color as well. Players must attack Pierre when they have a different color hat than him. Same colored hat players will heal Pierre if they attack him. The third and fourth bosses are giants, Crimson Queen and Vellum. Once the player finishes the four quests to defeat the four bosses, they can start doing daily quests for rewards.

The Root Abyss update could be the start of a new standard in MapleStory bosses and quests. The bosses require coordination and strategy, not just high levels and powerful gear. They also provide two different difficulties so higher geared and skilled players can have a challenge as well.
