Every year, the Shakespeare Festival in St. Louis selects one of Shakespeare’s plays to perform. The Festival is held in late spring/early summer in Forest Park. Families and homeschoolers come to enjoy the celebration.
Throughout the year, other theatrical troupes tap into the richness that Shakespeare has to offer. Dayspring School of the Arts, and individual homeschooler-initated groups, like Broadway on the Driveway introduce children to classic plays through drama.
The works of Shakespeare is more than classic literature written down in a playwright’s book and tucked away to collect dust. It contains lessons that open up learning opportunities for everyone who encounters them. And, children are no exception.
Does the thought of sitting down with your child to teach them the classic plays of Shakespeare sound tedious and overwhelming? Take a deep breath and get ready for an approach to the classics like you may have never seen before.
There is a new 6-book series released that is designed to get you and your child excited about Shakespeare. The series is called Sixty-Minute Shakespeare. The books summarize six of Shakespeare’s plays in a way that will take very little of your time. In the process, the author has amazingly maintained the original context of each play.
The Five Star Publications Company sent a copy of Sixty-Minute Shakespeare Romeo And Juliet by Cass Foster for an honest review. And, it is truly an amazing book that simplifies an otherwise complex and overly cumbersome process of learning from the classics.
Within this series are easy-to-read paperback versions of Shakespeare’s plays that make an essential addition to any homeschooler’s library. The plays covered include:
- MacBeth
- Twelfth Night
- Romeo and Juliet
- A Mid Summer Night’s Dream
- Hamlet
- Much Ado About Nothing
Also included between the covers of these books are excerpts of quotable lines, a timeline of Shakespeare’s plays, and images and themes to look for throughout the play.
If this abbreviated version of Shakespeare’s plays excites you, take the time to enter to win the entire 6-book set. The author wants to know which play to tackle next and is asking you to cast your vote as to which play should come next:
