"Piranha," is actually a decent film. For what is called a b-rated film that was made into the time of the popularity of "Jaws," Joe Dante's 1978 film, is pretty intense and does have some humor in it, but of course when the attacks happen it's no laughing matter!
The film is basically about the waters of a town get infected by piranhas. So it's up to Paul and Maggie to save the day. This film intimidates "Jaws," but it's funny with it's tongue and cheek way of making a film about man vs. nature.
One of the most intense scenes was with the summer camp scene because the children were in the water while they were swimming around looking for flesh! The near ending scene with the resort is pretty intense too, it would even make Jaws cringe. Dante wasn't afraid to place carnage all of the place.
It's a cult film, a great summer movie for those who like their 'don't go into the water' movies. The great horror actress, Barbara Steele is even a character in the movie which is a plus as is another cult horror icon, Dick Miller.
So if you like a classic campy film that is a wild ride and is ten times better than "Piranha 3DD" well this 1978 film is something to watch then. It's no "Jaws," but it knows that and that's what makes it a fun movie!
