Thomas Nelson: Nearing Home Life, Faith, and Finishing Well by Billy Graham

Even as a young whippersnapper I wondered what it felt like to be old and know you only had a few days, months, years to live. Now that I’m over 50, I’m getting a taste of what it’s like to grow old, but I still have questions That’s one reason I wanted to read Billy Graham’s book. What goes through the mind of a great Christian man on the brink of eternity?

This book is now one of my favorites and while I read it digitally, I do plan to own a hard copy because I believe it belongs in my library on a shelf where I can look at it and open it up at leisure. Page after page of wisdom is written and I could nearly argue that every Christian should read it before crossing over to eternity.

Billy Graham shares not only his personal experiences of growing older but also how we are to view our time on earth. “I never thought I would live to be this old,” he writes. And he goes on to explain that God has a purpose for all our years and how we can learn to cope with the fears and struggles of our aged limitations.

He misses his wife, Ruth, very much, be he knows God has a purpose for his remaining years and he works at grasping that truth and going with God. He explores four key areas in this book:

  1. Building strong foundations and understanding the gift of years
  2. Facing life’s transitions, including the passing of years, retirement, and when loved ones die
  3. Making wise decisions
  4. Understanding our glorious hope

Billy Graham describes his purpose for this book best:

“In this book I invite you to explore with me not only the realities of life as we grow older but the hope and fulfillment and even joy that can be ours once we learn to look at these years from God’s point of view and discover His strength to sustain us every day. I pray that you and I may learn what it means not only to grow older, but, with God’s help, to grow older with grace.”

I give this book 5 stars. It is an absolute treasure.

Disclaimer: I received a free digital copy of this book to review for Thomas Nelson Publishers, however, I the opinions expressed are solely mine and I was not pressured in any way to write a positive review.
