David Guetta's newest track is unlike anything he's released before. This is not necessarily a bad thing, although many music critics and fans across the world frown upon change. While repetition and sticking to what sells is a sign of an intelligent artist, it's nice to hear talented superstars spice it up and create songs that take their sound to an exciting level.
Shot me Down, featuring Skylar Grey is an electrifying tale of a long-term relationship that's been destroyed. The song starts out with a western, Robert Rodriguez/Grindhouse type of tone that makes you think you're about to watch a shootout between two cowboys. “He wore black and I wore white” alludes to the devastating wedding day between an engaged couple. Just as the story starts to unfold, the track cuts into an extreme EDM banger. Intense beats and hooks escalate while Grey's hypnotic voice guides us through her torment, as you can literally feel her energy and surprise of the situation. If this song doesn't make you want to work out, dance or have sex all at the same time, then you need to check your pulse. You'll be moving at the computer while you work hoping your boss doesn't catch you busting a move in the office.
Everything about this song works, even the colorful artwork to accompany it. David Guetta has always been a respected musician, but his evolution is what continues to outshine the rest. If you're looking for a sappy love song just in time for Valentine's Day, download Mariah Carey's new jam, You're Mine. For all those EDM lovers who've experienced loss in recent months, Shot Me Down will give a whole new meaning to love stories.
