You know once your meal opens at MXDC with the worst guacamole you have ever had that the evening is going south quickly. So salty and tart from lime that it is nearly inedible, you might as well send the guacamole back, but if you do you will regret it: it is still better than the other menu items.
The huitlacoche quesadilla is similarly over seasoned, and is accompanied by a black truffle chimichurri that seems to be missing the black truffle. The sweet corn gratin meanwhile so rich it will coat your insides. Overly sweet and not nearly spicy enough, it is more like a dessert than a side dish. Octopus tacos are a huge disappointment with flavorless, if-you-blink-you’ll-miss-it pieces of octopus. Prices may seem reasonable, but portions are painfully small.
The painfully dark interior of the restaurant is uninviting and begs the question: if Todd English wanted to create a nightclub, why disguise it as a restaurant? At least if he called it what it is, the quality of food would be more forgivable.
In sum, just skip it. Better Mexican is available in DC. And even if it’s not, you don’t want to eat here.
