Hip hop has not always been the genre it is today. There was a time when it was all about expressing oneself positively and straightforwardly, without the need for half-naked women, expensive cars, and artists sporting fake, shiny jewellery from head to toe. If you miss that era, you may want to turn your ears towards Vancouver and check out Skulastic.
In her first solo, self-titled release, the young female artist gives listeners the opportunity to reconnect with old school hip hop — with some enjoyable nods towards jazz, soul, RnB, and funk. The LP features five feel-good, upbeat tracks, whose entertaining lyrics merge naturally into the sounds.
I particularly like the partnership between Skulastic and fellow MC Konfidential on the LP, especially the chemistry that they share. These two artists have serene, yet commanding voices that work really well together.
I am not a fan of hip hop. However, Skulastic won me over with her energy and punchy stance. She has a bright future ahead of her.
