Music Review: James "JD" Wilkerson "Strong"

I often look for the interesting and the unusual in the Detroit Metro to write on. It’s not often that it walks up to my door. Today, however, Mister James “JD” Wilkerson did just that.  It was bitterly cold. He was bundled up in a Lion’s jacket and cap with a big smile and a warm personality. As is my habit, I tend to find out a little more about people than what’s on the surface and learned about his passion. Something about the way he carried himself and how he spoke caused me to pause.  He told me about his music and I asked if he did shows, which he replied he sure did. So I purchased both his CD’s right there and had a listen.

His first CD, “Life Has Meaning” transports you back to a time of upbeat tunes and smooth R&B vocals. After a little research I learned that JD was part of Erasmus Hall, a popular R&B club and recording act from the early 80’s. Years later he released this solo album. He was the trumpeter, the keyboardist and the vocalist and wrote, produced, and arranged all eight tracks.

Impressed with the first CD, I immediately put in the next one which was produced in 2003. It’s titled “Strong”. It tells a very different story about a different part of his life. Reading each title, it reads like a love letter to his wife, Margaret Wilkerson, who the CD was dedicated to.  “Today Is the First Day of the Rest of My Life”, “I Will Always Be Around”, “Strong”, “It’s for the Love”, “I Write This Song with You in Mind”, and even “Bad Hair Day” all tell a love story. As with the first CD, I’m blown away by the trumpet, vocals, and saxophone solos.

I’m not usually a fan of R&B, but I am a fan of quality music and JD is a talented and dedicated artist. I’m glad we happened upon each other. Sometimes people meet for one reason and leave with another purpose. I don’t believe in accidents.

Another thing you should know about JD. His sister passed away from Lou Gehrig’s disease several years ago. Part of the proceeds from each purchase is donated to the Lou Gehrig Foundation.
