Mud Makes Love To Your Heart

See also

Mud is the coming of age story of a young boy, named Ellis (played by Tye Sheridan) who is trying to figure out how to make that big transformation into adulthood. But the movie is about oh so much more. It’s about uncompromising ideals when they come up against pragmatic real life. It’s about the choice of trying to live by your own set of rules or learning to accept what you cannot change.
Ellis lives on the river in a houseboat with his family. The houseboats are grandfathered into the law which does not allow new construction of houseboats and any violation or loophole will allow the authorities to come in and dismantle the only home Ellis has ever known. He and his friend Neckbone (played by Jacob Lofland) go out by boat to an island on the river where there’s a much bigger boat stuck up in a tree by some wild storm. They think they’re alone on the island when they run into Mud, (played by Matthew McConaughey). Mud is mysterious and gets Neckbone’s and the audience’ suspicions up. Ellis sees something else. Despite Neckbone’s reluctance, the boys go back to the island and bring Mud food. Mud realizes he needs the boys’ help even though he doesn’t want them to get involved. He lets the boys know that he’s running from the law. The deal is sealed for Ellis when Mud has the best reason of all for killing a man. It was to protect the woman that Mud loves and has always loved. Ellis, instantly respects this. His own parents are arguing and there’s the threat of divorce. He has strong feelings about what love should be.
The movie is a wonderful examination of the wild independent spirit against the encroachment of civilization, and all that entails. This theme is also reflected in the disillusionment of youthful beliefs. McConaughey is excellent, as are the supporting cast including Reese Wiherspoon as Mud’s one true love, Juniper, and Sam Shepard, as Mud’s former mentor, Tom Blankenship. You’ve got to see this one. .Now playing at The Flicks in Boise,
