Mr. Peabody & Sherman” based on the sixties cartoon of the same name asks the all-important question, can a dog adopt a boy? After-all if a boy can adopt a dog why not? In this funny, campy, movie rife with puns (very much like the cartoon on which it is predicated) Mr. Peabody, Ty Burrell is suddenly faced with the prospect of sending Sherman, Max Charles, to school. Yet, with all of the learning and lessons he has already experienced through their travels in the “way back” machine, it is clear that Sherman while appearing to know more than most of the children, will also be seen as a nerd and outcast. Of course he makes his first mistake in history class when he outshines Penny Peterson, Ariel Winter, who is not only pretty, but smart and popular. Penny then picks a fight with Sherman, and in the heat of the moment, he bites her after she insults him by calling him a dog. It is from here, that the authorities are notified and Mr. Peabody is threatened with loosing custody of Sherman.
This movie is unique in that it is not just the parent who needs to learn how to be a better parent, (allowing the child to be a child, to make mistakes and have fun) but the child (Sherman) who learns that disobeying authority can have its own consequences.
There are many historical cameos in the film as they travel through time to the French Revolution, Renaissance Italy, and Ancient Egypt meeting famous characters such as Da Vinci, Marie Antoinette, and King Tut that allow for moments of hilarity for both adults and children.
There are not many films these days that cross both generations and at the same time do not leave children feeling they missed out on something, or parents finding that there was nothing in it for them. “Mr. Peabody and Sherman” does both.
