When the world thinks about the California music scene San Diego doesn't usually register. The focus seems to be on L.A. and the Sunset Strip, but this does not mean that San Diego has no music scene or its share of great bands. Recently I was lucky enough to see new comers and soon to be a house hold name Hi Def Dynamite plus veterans to the music scene, Mower.
If you expect more out of your bands than just songs being played on stage you are like me. I just feel that any band can make a good recording thanks to the technology available to Producers in today's hi tech studios. But how do they come across on stage? In Hi Def Dynamite's case one word comes to mind - explosive. Not only is the music hard, fast, and will get your booty shaking, each show features a new theme with costumes and props. The new comers have done a good amount of themed shows including their Pajama Party (at a Gentlemen's Club), a Star Wars themed show, a Burlesque themed show, and their most recent show at the House of Blues San Diego the theme was Red. If the music is not enough to get your motor humming the dancers will. Playing originals and doing covers with their twist on it, this band will melt your face and make you dance. Headlining this night of naughty mayhem was Mower. This band, formed in San Diego in the 1990's was a national touring act and are soon to be again. After a long hiatus they came back home to play an asses to elbows show for their home town fans, but not everyone at the show was from San Diego. Fans from all over the country flew in just to see this band take the stage again. With 2 MC's and a hard core Metal/Punk band behind them, this band is pure hard ear candy. I had never seen Mower live but thanks to the Music Gods I saw them at this show. You can see some of the Mower chaos and carnage that I witnessed by clicking the following link http://youtu.be/Fx1SK6IIwVY
After seeing over 275 plus bands this year alone I can say that only a few stand out. My criteria includes how do they sound, do they play or do they perform, how do they engage the crowd, and do they have original elements to them? In this case both Hi Def Dynamite and Mower went above and beyond anything I could ask for in a live music event.
