Movie to watch: The Stoning of Soraya M.

Stephen McEveety, producer of the Passion Of The Christ and Braveheart, takes part in delivering a beautifully made and heartbreaking foreign drama in The Stoning of Soraya M.

Taking place in1986 in Iran, Soraya is a victim of her environment and her abusive husband who betrays her in the worst way possible in favor of another woman. His abuse also carries on in other ways as he turns their sons against Soraya by making her seem inferior. His accusations of adultery against Soraya lead to her punishment, a price her husband is willing to pay to get what he wants.

During Soraya’s stoning, which is very devastating to watch, it becomes a stab to your heart as you see who is included in the mob that is stoning her. Sorraya’s aunt is also an essential character to the film. She is strong and outspoken, and not weakened by her circumstances, sticking by Soraya to the end.

It is not just the way she is treated by her husband and community that grabs you throughout this film. It is the visual understanding of the severe oppression that this woman faces.

Based on a true story, this movie will stick with you long after the credits roll.
