The shocking news of Whitney Houston's death today struck a chord within me: She was one of the all-time great pop singers and her live performances were all emotional and grand. Hearing all her songs again, especially her signature song "I Will Always Love You", made me pop in her acting debut film "The Bodyguard" to feed me some Whitney nostolgia.
The movie itself became overwhelmed by the success of the movie's main song, but nevertheless, it is a pretty good movie on it's own right. Kevin Costner plays Frank Farmer, a professional bodyguard who is only hired by the best. This time, the one who needs him is a mega superstar singer (Houston) who has been recieving death threats and stalker phone calls and letters. The movie dives into predictability when Costner and Houston start to develop an intimate relationship, but overall it is not the most worst way to spend a couple of hours. This movie was made in the highlight of Houston's career since it showcases her greatest achievement in music and film.
I guess, in a way, rewatching this film was my way of remembering and honoring on Houston on her life and career. Much of the film may be average, but audiences will definitely get struck when Houston finally performs "I Will Always Love You" in the film's finale. This moment alone is worth five stars. The rest of the film: 3.
