“I’ll come back soon I promise.”– AJ Bowen as Crispian
What’s good: It is so much fun to watch how the characters are going to die.
What’s not good: It’s not very scary.
What happened: A long time ago, it seemed as if scary movies were only released near Halloween to put people in the spirit of the season. Horror films nowadays tend to be in the theaters practically year around. Really scary movies are hard to come by these days and, unfortunately, ‘You’re Next’ offers more laughs than scares.
College professor Crispian (AJ Bowen) and his former student turned girlfriend Erin (Sharni Vinson) have been dating for a little while now. They are struggling with money, but are still very much in love. The couple is on their way to visit his parents for their wedding anniversary party. While Erin is excited to meet her potential in-laws, Crispian is not looking forward to the trip. It has been a while since the family has been together so this night is going to be special.
The entire family arrives at their dad’s (Rob Moran) new retirement house deep in the woods. Crispian has always had an issue with his brother Drake (Joe Swanberg) and they instantly argue just like old times. His little sister Aimee (Amy Seimetz) is still sweet and Felix (Nicholas Tucci) is, well, Felix. Everyone is having a great time at dinner when chaos erupts. Dead bodies and blood-curdling screams take over the once quiet home. It is up to Erin to escape the night with her life before the killers take her down.
‘You’re Next’ offers really brutal murders for horror fans to enjoy. Be prepared to see a lot of blood in this one. The tension builds as each character gets closer to their ultimate demise. It is pretty cool how menacing the masked killers are at the beginning. The film keeps you guessing who they are and why this is happening. The best moments are when Erin takes charge of the situation and starts fighting back. Revenge is sweet as she unleashes her wrath on the killers making the hunters become the hunted. Sharni Vinson is really good in her role. She is so much fun to watch that you will wish she had more victims to slaughter. This film is mostly predictable except for the one surprise reveal about who is behind it all.
Sadly, ‘You’re Next’ is so slow that it becomes tedious to watch. It takes far too long to get to the action and none of it is scary. Again, the movie is extremely predictable so you will quickly know what is going to happen in every scene. One of the sillier moments was when Aimee tried to make a run for it to get help. You will start laughing instantly when she does this because it is so obvious what is coming. Now who would run outside knowing there are several killers with crossbows laying in wait for you? You will honestly yell at the screen wondering why hardly anyone can make a smart decision. Finally, it is too difficult to see what is going on when the killers attack because of the dreaded shaky camera. This surely prevents people from really enjoying the carnage.
Bottom Line: ‘You’re Next’ is a descent flick that you certainly can wait on. Save your hard earned cash and wait to see it when it becomes a rental.
