Movie review: World War Z

A zombie pandemic has broken out and U.N. employee, Gerry, is in a race against time as the virus spreads quickly through the human population. As the virus takes over and the undead gain numbers, governments and continents are falling leaving mankind on the brink of extinction.

Brad Pitt (Gerry), Mireille Enos (Karin), Daniella Kertesz (Segen), James Dale (Captain Speke), Ludi Boeken (Jurgen), David Morse (Ex-CIA Agent), Matthew Fox (Parajumper), Fana Mokoena (Thierry), Elyes Gabel (Fassbach).

World War Z doesn't waste much time with character development or back-story before jumping right into the nastiness. Not just another zombie flick, the undead in World War Z are fast and the virus is smart. The question is; Are human beings smarter than zombies? As Gerry rushes to help he quickly finds himself as the guy who thinks faster on his feet that those around him. Even so, saving his family becomes intertwined with saving the human race.

Acting was pretty good with Pitt pulling out a believable performance. Enos played against Pitt well and added her own contributions. Mokoena did well in his role, as did Morse. The remainder of the supporting cast delivered nicely.

Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were all well done with quality one would expect from a big budget film. Effects were very good with nice attention to detail and a surprisingly realistic feel. Zombie makeup and costuming was particularly well done. Dialogue was good and kept things moving along easily. Sound and soundtrack were both good.

Overall World War Z is an entertaining, and more unique than expected, zombie flick that exhibits good quality all around. Zombie film fans will likely enjoy this one quite a bit, and debate it for a long time.

With plenty of intense zombie scenes, violence, and disturbing images this should be fine for teens and above.
