Movie review: Werewolf: The Beast Among Us

When a mysterious creature begins terrorizing a village, a local man joins a team of self-professed werewolf hunters to capture and kill the animal. Giving up studies under the town doctor, the man dedicates himself to finding and killing the beast destroying the life he knows. But as those around him are turned into werewolves he begins to suspect the danger comes from within the town itself.

Nia Peeples (Valdoma), Ed Quinn (Charles), Stephen Rea (Doc), Steven Bauer (Hyde), Rachel DiPillo (Eva), Ana Ularu (Kazia), Guy Wilson (Daniel), Adam Croasdell (Stefan).

Werewolf: The Beast Among Us starts off well enough with some mild backstory and character development before things get rolling. As the story evolves, we are shown more and more of the creature while involvement with other characters becomes even more confusing. The plot is fairly simplistic and the film appears to have been trying to emulate Van Helsing or any number of other recent fantasy action films. In the end of course all is explained and a happily ever after ending is supplied for our enjoyment.

Acting was mediocre in this one with Rea probably being the most experienced actor, presenting dryly as usual. Peeples was mildly entertaining but felt like she was delivering a role above her character in the film. Wilson was okay but felt like he was catching up with the plot throughout the story.

Camera work was okay but extremely dark in many shots, making viewing difficult. Sets and backgrounds were natural or again, quite dark, making detail difficult. Effects both physical and CGI were decent enough though some of the werewolf scenes were a bit animated. Dialogue was okay, as were sound and soundtrack.

Overall Werewolf: The Beast Among Us is a mediocre entry in the supernatural horror genre that doesn't really bring much new to the table. The plot is fairly predictable, including the ending. Werewolf and die-hard horror fans will enjoy this the most.

With plenty of bloody violence and gore this should be fine for older teens and above.

Werewolf: The Beast Among Us is no longer showing in any Littleton Colorado movie theatres.
