Movie review: Weed Wars

Weed Wars takes a look inside the nation's largest medical marijuana dispensary, following owner Steve DeAngelo, his family, and employees as they navigate the law and serve their patients. This Discovery Channel film shows us the inner workings of a dispensary at all levels with the mistakes as well as the victories.

Stephen DeAngelo, Andrew DeAngelo, Luigi Zamarra, Rick Pfrommer.

This Discovery Channel production takes a look at the inner workings of Harborside, the largest medical marijuana dispensary in the U.S., from the financial workings to daily management of the business. Following Steve DeAngelo, his family, and key employees we get to see how the business is managed (or, arguably not managed), the legal and financial struggles, along with how MMJ is able to make a positive impact on the quality of life for many people.

Although this is a reality series several of the people filmed do appear to be making an attempt at acting or are truly larger than life. Fortunately the result was entertaining rather than feeling practiced or unrealistic, or dry as with some documentaries using real people.

Camera work was pretty good throughout. Sets and backgrounds were natural but somewhat well selected. Dialogue was good and did a fair job of explaining how and why things were happening though the decision making process felt excluded or even scripted at times. Sound and soundtrack were both well done.

Overall Weed Wars is an entertaining reality series if only because it shows us something never really seen before. Those with interest in the MMJ industry and how dispensaries are taking form will probably enjoy this series.

With some mild foul language and extensive drug use this should be fine for older teens and above.
