Movie review: Unstoppable

In Northern Pennsylvania a train is left unmanned and becomes a speeding bomb when it is determined to be carrying a load of lethal chemicals and headed for derailment at a gasoline storage facility. After a couple of failed attempts at stopping the train, two men who barely dodge the out of control bomb decide to chase it down and stop it no matter what.

Denzel Washington (Frank), Chris Pine (Will), Rosario Dawson (Connie), Ethan Suplee (Dewey), Kevin Dunn (Oscar), Kevin Corrigan (Werner), Kevin Chapman (Bunny), Lew Temple (Ned), Jessy Schram (Darcy).

Unstoppable begins like a train, moving slowly and struggling to gain momentum. After some character development plot setup gets things moving with a bit of action after which the film is on a pretty good roll. As the suspense and action intensify the film holds audience interest well. The only downside is several plot holes, a couple of which become glaringly obvious later in the film. The ending is a nice happily-ever-after moment that leaves us feeling like we must have escaped a close one because we are being told so.

Acting was pretty good with Pine delivering nicely as usual. Washington did good though it was surprising to seem him not participating in the action in an action film until the last 20 minutes or so. Dawson did well bringing the action together with the suspense and the film would have failed without her. It was also nice to see Suplee in a serious role rather than a sitcom.

Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were all very nicely done and felt quite realistic throughout the film. Action scenes were good with well done CGI that blended nicely with the natural backgrounds. Dialogue was solid and moved the story along well. Sound and soundtrack were also good.

Overall Unstoppable is a solid action adventure flick with a refreshing plot that would have deserved a better rating if not for the plot holes. The film appears to have had a decent budget and has good technical quality throughout.

With some mild foul language and dangerous situations Unstoppable should be fine for teens and above.

Unstoppable is no longer showing in any Littleton Colorado movie theatres.
