Settling in for her first year of college, freshman Sara doesn't mind it when she gets a seemingly friendly new roommate, Rebecca, but it isn't long before she realizes something isn't quite right. As Rebecca becomes more and more obsessed she begins targeting Sara's friends hoping to keep Sara to herself.
Leighton Meester (Rebecca), Minka Kelly (Sara), Cam Gigandet (Stephen), Alyson Michalka (Tracy), Danneel Ackles (Irene), Frances Fisher (Alison), Tomas Arana (Jeff), Billy Zane (Professor Roberts), Matt Lanter (Jason).
The Roommate starts off well enough with decent plot setup and character background before the somewhat overused plot kicks into gear. We quickly realize we have seen this story plenty of times as Rebecca becomes fixated on Sara and begins to control her, eliminate her friends, and destroy her life from the shadows. As the story evolves further there is some good suspense and drama and the film remains fairly interesting through the end.
Acting was mediocre with Meester, Kelly and Gigandet delivering fairly well and apparently enjoying decent chemistry. Zane was an interesting addition but didn't quite seem to fit the film. The remainder of the supporting cast felt somewhat inexperienced but did pretty well.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were mild but nicely done. Effects and action scenes were nicely done with a few good gore and violence shots. Dialogue and sound were fairly well done throughout.
Overall The Roommate is a fairly entertaining mid-level entry in the Thriller or Psychological Thriller category that could have been much better had it added something new to the well worn story.
With violence, mild gore, foul language, sex scenes, and teen partying this should be fine for teens and above.
The Roommate is no longer showing in any Littleton Colorado movie theatres.
