Catholic priest Michael is put to the test when the church sends him to the Vatican for exorcism training despite his belief possession doesn't exist. Shortly after starting training Michael is sent to study with an experienced exorcist who immediately has Michael helping him with his work. As the two learn from each other Michael must pass a final exam he will never forget.

The Rite starts off a bit slow but picks up the pace when it starts to look like another remake of The Exorcist. Thankfully the film takes a few twists and turns and ends up not looking as much like the original as expected. Still, the plot becomes a bit redundant for a while, providing no plot points or twists, leaving us enjoying the depth but wishing the film could have done a bit more from the story perspective.
Acting was pretty good with Hopkins still able to deliver when it counts. O'Donoghue was questionable at first but slid into his role nicely about midway through the film. Braga was decent as always. Hauer was a bit strange again but then, he always was. The remainder of the supporting cast did nicely.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were solid and well done but only added to the feel of the film leaving us once again wanting more. Action was mild and mildly done but solid. Dialogue and sound were both good though a few accents were tough, and there were some subtitles.
Overall The Rite is a somewhat entertaining twist on a now classic tale that is good for a fairly calm night without devouring your attention. Fans of the story will enjoy this the most while others may find it lethargic.
With violence, disturbing images, foul language, sexual references and mildly disturbing material this should be fine for teens and above.
The Rite is no longer showing in any Littleton, Colorado movie theatres.
