Arthur is a hitman who realizes he was duped into killing his long time mentor. Teaming up and training the man's son, Steve, the two set out on a path of destruction while hunting down those responsible for his death. Meanwhile, Arthur struggles to keep from Steve the fact that he killed his father.
Jason Statham (Arthur), Ben Foster (Steve), Tony Goldwyn (Dean), Donald Sutherland (Harry), Jeff Chase (Burke), Mini Anden (Sarah), James Logan (Jorge), Eddie Fernandez (Lara's Guard), Joshua Bridgewater (Carjacker).
The Mechanic begins with a taste of Arthur's life that builds some mild character background and provides good plot setup. Once Arthur kills Harry things get interesting quick as Steve inserts himself into Arthur's life insisting he wants to kills those responsible for murdering his father. With the action and lies coming hot and heavy the film turns into a nice roller-coaster ride of violence, drama, and suspense up through a nicely done ending.
Acting was pretty good with Statham completely in type and hammering it out as always. Foster was a bit hard to swallow at first but stepped it up for a nicely done performance. Sutherland also did well and kept his quirky personality out of things for once. The remainder of the supporting cast did pretty well.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were all solid and fit the film well. Action and violence effects were nicely done and supported the film very well. Dialogue was mediocre with some hard to swallow lines while sound and soundtrack were both well done.
Overall The Mechanic puts Statham back to work as an action hero and in the end pulls it off very well. The film flows nicely despite the story being somewhat bland and familiar. Action fans will likely enjoy this the most while those wanting depth may be a bit disappointed.
With plenty of strong violence, foul language, sexuality, and nudity save this for older teens and above.
The Mechanic is no longer showing in any Littleton Colorado movie theatres.
